Ball Copra

Ball Copra

Farmers dry the mature coconuts for at least 11 months during which process the water in the nut gets dried naturally, lending unique sweet taste to copra. The dried nut is de-husked and de-shelled to obtain copra, which is ball shape. Hence, it is called ball copra

Ball copra is of superfine quality and commands a premium price in the market. It is prepared by storing fully mature nuts for 10-12 months, when kernal will get detached from the shell. CPCRI has developed dryer to prepare ball copra in shorter time by giving different heat treatments.

Copra is valued for the coconut oil extracted from it and for the resulting residue, coconut-oil cake, which is used mostly for livestock feed. Copra was introduced as a source of edible fat in northern Europe in the 1860s because of a shortage of dairy fats.

The full form of COPRA is The Consumer Protection Act, 1986. This was the act of Parliament of India enacted in 1986 to protect the interests of consumers in India. It was made to establish consumer councils and other authorities to settle consumer's grievances and matters connected with it.
